Silver Angelfish Breeders
DESCRIPTIONSilver Angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare) — Care, ID & Requirements
Type: Classic wild-type coloration of P. scalare · Adult size: body 10–12 cm (4–5"), fins much longer · Tank height: important.
How to Identify a Silver Angelfish
- Vertical bars: Typically three dark vertical bars on a silvery body (eye-bar + two on flanks).
- Body shape: Tall, laterally compressed disc with long dorsal/anal fins and trailing ventrals.
- Compare: Marble/veil/koi morphs alter pattern/fin length; “silver” keeps wild-type bars and standard fins (veil variants have greatly elongated fins).
Water & Tank Parameters
| Temperature | 76–82 °F (24–28 °C) |
| pH | 6.0–7.5 (soft–moderate hardness) |
| Tank size | 29–40 gal minimum; tall tank preferred; larger for groups/pairs. |
| Flow | Moderate, not harsh; broad-leaf plants and wood for cover. |
Diet & Behavior
Diet: Quality cichlid/betta pellets, frozen/live (brine shrimp, bloodworms, daphnia). Vary diet for color and condition.
Behavior: Semi-peaceful cichlid; can prey on very small fish as adults. Avoid fin-nippers (e.g., tiger barbs) that damage long fins.
Breeding
- Pair-forming, substrate spawners; clean vertical surface (broad leaf/slate).
- Parents may guard eggs/fry; provide calm tank and stable parameters.
