Goldfish (Carassius auratus)
Overview: Goldfish are one of the oldest domesticated fish species, bred in China more than 1,000 years ago . They are hardy, cold-water fish and thrive in larger tanks or ponds.
Varieties: Common and Comet Goldfish; Fancy types such as Oranda, Ryukin, Ranchu, Telescope Eye, Pearlscale, and Lionhead. Colors include orange, white, red, black, calico, and metallic gold.
Care & Tank Setup:
Require (spacious tanks): minimum 20 gallons for a single fish, with an additional 10 gallons per extra.
Temperature: 65-75 degrees F (18-24 degrees C).
Produce heavy waste, strong filtration is essential.
Temperament: Generally "peaceful and social", though they may outcompete smaller fish for food. Not aggressive, but can grow quite large (up to 12 + inches).
Tankmates: Other goldfish (of similar size/varieties) White Cloud Mountain Minnows, Dojo Loaches, and certain snails. Avoid tropical species like Bettas or Guppies (different water requirements).
