Guppies (Poecilia reticulata)

Overview: Guppies, also called millionfish due to their prolific breeding, originate from northern South America (Venezuela, Guyana, Barbados, Trinidad). They are colorful, hardy, and excellent for beginners.

Varieties: Tail types: Delta, Lyretail, Roundtail, Swordtail, and Fan. Color strains include snakeskin, mosaic, tuxedo, albino, and cobra patterns.

Care & Tank Setup:

  • Minimum tank: 10 gallons for a small group
  • Temperature: 74-82 degrees F (23-28 degrees C)
  • pH: 6.8-7.8
Require plants or hiding places since fry (babies) are often eaten by adults.

Temperament:

Peaceful community fish Males can be persistent toward females, so maintain a 2-3 females per male ratio.

Tankmates: Great with other peaceful fish such as Mollies, Platies, Corydoras, Tetras, and Rasboras. Avoid aggressive species like Bettas or large cichlids.Guppy Tankmates has more informtion regarding breeding as well.
