Betta Fish (Betta splendens)

Overview: Betta fish, also known as Siamese fighting fish, are among the most popular freshwater aquarium pets thanks to their vivid colors and flowing fins. Native to shallow rice paddies, slow-moving streams, and floodplains of Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam , Bettas have adapted to low-oxygen waters and can breathe air directly through their labyrinth organ.

Varieties: Veiltail, Crowntail, Halfmoon, Delta, Double Tail, Rosetail, and Plakat Color morphs range from vibrant reds and blues to rare koi, galaxy, and metallic variations.

Care & Tank Setup:

  • Ideal tank size: minimum 5 gallons per Betta
  • Temperature: 76-82 degrees F (24-28 degrees C)
  • pH: 6.5-7.5
  • Gentle filtration and plenty of plants/caves are recommended.

Temperament: Known for territorial and aggressive behavior, especially males. Females can sometimes be kept in groups (sororities) but require careful monitoring.

Tankmates: Peaceful species that won't nip fins, such as Corydoras catfish, small Rasboras, and certain snails/shrimp. Avoid housing Bettas with other male Bettas, flashy guppies, or fin-nippers.
