Crowntail Betta Breeders

Crowntail Betta (Betta splendens) — Care, ID & Requirements
Type: Domestic fancy variety (crowntail) of Betta splendens · Adult size: ~6–7 cm (2.4–2.8") · Lifespan: 3–5 years with good husbandry.
How to Identify a Crowntail (CT)
- Spiky fin edges: The fin rays extend beyond the fin webbing, producing a “crown” or spiked outline.
- Webbing reduction (WR): Distinct reduction of membrane between rays, typically ? ~1/3 of ray length (combtails have less reduction and look “toothed,” not spiky).
- Ray types: Single-ray CT (SRCT), double-ray CT (DRCT), and triple-ray CT (TRCT) — the number of ray branches that extend beyond the webbing.
- Form quality: Even, straight rays with consistent spacing; minimal curling/twisting of rays; clean, regular points around the fin edge.
- Halfmoon Crowntail (HMCT): Some lines achieve ~180° caudal spread and crowntail webbing reduction.
Water & Tank Parameters
| Temperature | 76–82 °F (24–28 °C) ideal ~78–80 °F |
| pH | ~6.5–7.5 (stable, slightly acidic to neutral) |
| Hardness | Soft–moderate (~3–12 dGH; low–mid TDS); avoid extremes to reduce fin curl risk |
| Tank size | Single fish: minimum 5 gal; 7.5–10 gal recommended for stability and scaping |
| Filtration & flow | Gentle flow (sponge/baffled). Crowntail rays can snag/tear; avoid strong currents and sharp décor. |
| Aquascape | Planted tank with broad leaves, hides, and resting spots near surface; keep a tight-fitting lid (labyrinth fish). |
Diet & Behavior
Diet: Carnivorous micropredator; offer varied high-protein foods: quality betta pellets, frozen/live (daphnia, brine shrimp, blackworms), and occasional treats.
Temperament: Territorial, especially males. Keep singly or with very calm, non-nipping tankmates in appropriate setups. Avoid fin-nippers and strong swimmers that stress CT fins.
Health & Fin Care (CT-specific)
- Maintain pristine water to prevent fin rot; crowntail rays/webbing can show damage quickly.
- Minimize hard edges and suction risks (pre-filter sponge on intakes).
- Stable parameters and moderate hardness help reduce chronic fin curling.
Breeding
- Typical Betta splendens bubble-nesting behavior; paternal care of eggs/fry.
- Condition with rich foods; use gentle filtration and floating plants for nest support.
- Pair carefully; provide cover and watch for aggression.

Note: Crowntail is a domestic variety; water and temperament are as for B. splendens. Fin structure means extra attention to flow, snag risks, and water quality.
