Red Cap Oranda Breeders

Red Cap Oranda (Carassius auratus) — Care, ID & Requirements
Type: Fancy goldfish (Oranda) · Adult size: 15–20 cm (6–8")+ · Lifespan: 10–15+ years with excellent care.
How to Identify a Red Cap Oranda
- Wen “cap”: Distinct, raspberry-like red wen on the head; body and fins are white/metallic.
- Body & fins: Rounded, deep-bodied fancy form with a double tail and a present dorsal fin (separates from Ranchu/Lionhead).
- Quality cues: Even, well-defined red cap; clear eyes; smooth scales; symmetrical double tail; no pinched abdomen.
Water & Tank Parameters
| Temperature | 65–72 °F (18–22 °C) ideal; tolerable 60–75 °F (16–24 °C). Cooler than tropical. |
| pH | ~6.8–7.8; stable is key. |
| Hardness | Moderate–hard; good mineral content helps osmoregulation. |
| Tank size | Single fancy: minimum 30 gal; add ~20 gal per additional fancy. Long footprint preferred. |
| Filtration & flow | High filtration (messy fish) with gentle flow; plenty of oxygenation. |
| Aquascape | Smooth décor; avoid sharp edges. Sand or rounded gravel; live plants that tolerate cooler water. |
Diet & Health
Diet: High-quality sinking pellets, gel foods, blanched greens; supplement with frozen/live foods. Avoid chronic gulping of floating flakes (buoyancy issues).
Health notes: Wen can be prone to abrasion/infection; maintain pristine water and avoid sharp décor.
